Aged under 25 and looking for car rental? No problem.
Being under 25 shouldn’t be a barrier for car hire. It isn’t at Avis, and we offer a variety of young driver car rental options. Whether you’re hiring a car for a holiday, a day trip, or maybe just to move your stuff back to university or a new place, we have a great selection of vehicles to suit your needs.
We want to make car rental for young people as simple and stress-free as possible. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to rental car rules for under 25s, so you can feel confident before making your booking with us. Check out our FAQs below for more details.
Minimum ages for car rental if you are under 25 will vary depending on where you’re picking up your vehicle. In most European and North American locations, the minimum age to rent a car is 21, and in Scandinavia it is 19.
The minimum age for car hire in the UK is 23. Age restrictions also vary by vehicle, and selected car groups are not available to drivers under the age of 25.
You can find out more by reading the “Details” about the vehicle you’re interested in on our Search Results (booking) page before selecting it. We’ll also include this in your Booking Confirmation email.
For more information, please read the Age Information section of the Location Specific Conditions or speak to our reservations team.
If you’re seeking under 25s car rental in the UK, you will need to have held a full driving licence for at least one year.
As with the age restrictions, for certain car groups we may ask that have held your licence for longer. These details can also be found on the booking page and in your confirmation email.
You can check all of our Driving Licence and ID requirements on our Location Specific Conditions page, or contact our reservations team or more information about our car rental policy for under 25s.
If you (or any additional drivers) are aged under 25 when you hire a car, you will each have to pay a Young Driver’s Surcharge.
This is because younger drivers are perceived to be higher risk, and the surcharge covers this additional risk. Again, the under 25 car rental fee varies by location, so the amount you pay will depend on where you‘re picking up your vehicle and how many people wish to drive the hire car.
The surcharge that applies at the location where you’re collecting your rental will be included in the cost we quote when you make your booking.
For a young driver car hire quote, use the booking panel above. To find car rental deals for under 25s, please ensure that you uncheck the “Driver aged between 30 and 70” box and provide your date of birth when prompted. This will ensure that we only show you the vehicles available to under 25s.
Looking to hire a car abroad? While you have to be 23 in the UK, the age for renting a car varies worldwide. In most European and North American destinations, you need to be over 21 for car rental, and in places like Scandinavia the minimum age is as low as 19.
The license requirement also differs between countries. In some European locations such as Germany, you only need to have held a driving licence for 6 months. In the US or Canada, the licence policy varies by state or province.
Before planning to rent a car abroad, make sure that you check the Age Information and Driving Licence and ID requirements sections of the Location Specific Conditions page. You can also view our complete list of airport and overseas locations here to see if your preferred destination is available.
