Road rules in Israel
When you are hiring a car abroad, it’s useful to be prepared for the different driving laws in the country you are travelling to as well as checking the documents you need to carry.
To help make your trip to as smooth as possible, we've put together some of the key road rules in Isreal.

Which Side of the Road?
In Israel, please drive on the RIGHT side of the road.
Unique Country Driving Laws
- Seatbelts are compulsory front and rear.
- Children under 13 years old are not allowed to sit in the front.
- It is illegal to speak with a mobile phone without a hands-free device.
- Headlights must be on during winter months when driving on main motorways.
- If stopping on the side of the main motorway for any reason, it is compulsory for all outside the vehicle to wear a reflective jacket (day or night).
- Carry your driving licence at all times, as well as your Avis rental and insurance details.
- There is a toll road named "Highway 6" which stretches from the north of Israel (Ein-Tut junction between Zichron-Yaakov and Yokneam) to the south (Maachaz junction near Beer-Sheva). Payment is made automatically via a car licence scanner and the bill is sent to the driver by mail or rental company.
Speed Limits
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers (unless indicated by road signs):
- Inside the city: 40-50 km/h
- Roads outside the city without a barrier: 80 km/h
- Roads outside the city with a barrier: 90 km/h
- Highways: 100 km/h
- Toll roads: 110 km/h
Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws
It is compulsory for all inside the vehicle to wear a seatbelt
- Children under 13 years old are not allowed to sit in the front.
- Please ensure you use a child seat that is appropriate for their size.
Please note - It is the child’s parent / guardian or vehicle renter’s responsibility to fit the child seat.
