When you are hiring a car abroad, it’s useful to be prepared for the different driving laws in the country you are travelling to as well as checking the documents you need to carry.
To help make your trip to as smooth as possible, we've put together some of the key road rules in Hungary.

What are the driving requirements in Hungary?
The minimum driving age is 17. However, you must be at least 21 years old to hire a car.
Can I use my UK driving licence in Hungary?
Yes, you must carry your UK driving licence with you. If you’re driving for more than 30 days, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Are there special road rules I need to know for driving in Hungary?
When turning onto a main road, pedestrians have right of way when crossing.
What are the laws on overtaking in Hungary?
You may overtake from the left. Always respect a safe distance and give pedestrians priority.
Can you turn right on a red light in Hungary?
Turning right on a red light is strictly prohibited.
What are the rules on alcohol in Hungary?
Hungary has zero tolerance on drink driving. The BAC limit is 0.00%.
Are there any unique road signs I need to know in Hungary?

What are the rules on using headlights in the day in Hungary?
If your headlights can’t be adjusted, then you must carry headlight converters (anti-dazzle stickers) by law.

Unique Country Driving Laws
- Mobile phones are allowed only with headsets.
- Use of horn is prohibited unless in danger.
- If using the Hungarian motorways M1, M3, M5 and M7, drivers need to obtain correct motorway vignette, you can purchase these at petrol stations and post offices. Avis Hungary's vehicles are equipped with e-vignette (valid only in territory of Hungary). Please ask your Avis representative for further details.
- Please always check the parking zone conditions (mandatory period and charges).
Speed Limits
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
- Urban areas: 31 mph (50 km/h)
- Rural areas: 55 mph (90 km/h) or 68mph (110km/h)
- Motorways: 80 mph (130 km/h)
Unless indicated by road signs. Please pay attention to speed limits (traffic fines extend from 100 EUR to 1,000 EUR).
Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws
It is compulsory for all inside the vehicle to wear a seatbelt.
- Children under 3 and measuring less than 150cm must be seated in an appropriate child restraint for their size.
- Children over 3 and measuring more than 135cm do not need to be seated in an appropriate child restraint if the vehicle’s own seat belt fits for their size.
Please note - It is the child’s parent / guardian or vehicle renter’s responsibility to fit the child seat.
