Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands and home to around a third of the total population. As the islands’ main port, fishing culture and tradition dominate the region, and there’s also some fascinating ancient history to explore.
Fort Charlotte, nestled on the city’s eastern edge, dates back to 1781, but fortifications have been on the site since as early as 1665. With fantastic views of the city and harbour, it’s a popular stop for visitors.
Commercial Street is a ‘must-see’ attraction, boasting beautiful 18-century houses along the waterfront, while Hay’s Dock is the location of the Shetland Museum and Archives. A hall with old boats hanging from the ceiling is a highlight, but the museum also displays arts and crafts from across the ages.
Drive a short distance to Clickimin Loch, which is perfect for an afternoon picnic or swim in the tranquil waters when the weather is warm. There is a circular stone broch, or tower, here that is said to be one of the best-preserved in the UK, dating back to the 7th century BC.
If you’re visiting in early January, you’ll be able to witness the famous Up Helly Aa festival. This elaborate winter tradition involves a procession of volunteers clad in Viking armour, and culminates in the torching of a longship.
