The Greek Island of Rhodes is steeped in myth and legend and has been attracting visitors for centuries. There’s something to suit all tastes and budgets here, from sleepy inland villages to historic towns and cosmopolitan seaside resorts.
Butterfly Valley
Just over a 30-minute drive from Faliraki is Butterfly Valley. This beautiful nature reserve offers shady forested areas, waterfalls and ponds. From mid-June to mid-September thousands of Callimorpha butterflies use the park as a temporary home, attracted by the resin of the storax trees.
Lindos
Drive for around 40 minutes from Faliraki and visit the town of Lindos. Offering a taste of traditional Greece, this delightful spot has an array of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets. Be sure to visit the famous Temple of Athena (situated within the Acropolis archaeological area) while you’re here.
Palace of the Grand Masters
Just 25 minutes from Faliraki by car is the Palace of the Grand Masters, settled in Rhodes Town. This imposing 14th century palace was lavishly rebuilt as a holiday retreat for Mussolini and is now a museum showcasing mosaics, antique furniture and sculptures.
Hiring a car makes it simple to explore all that Faliraki and the island of Rhodes has to offer, plus you’re able to experience the Greek coastline at its finest along the way.
Plan your journey from Faliraki Rhodes
From your hire car pick-up point, you’re just 10 minutes from the harbour of Faliraki – a bustling seaside resort with a 5km stretch of sandy beach offering much entertainment and dining.
The paradisiacal main beach is definitely the village’s star attraction and – aside from sunbathing and swimming – there are many water activities to choose from, including banana boating, jet-skiing and water-skiing. With its white sand and glistening waters, this is a popular hangout for both locals and tourists.
If you want somewhere more low-key, there are a couple of other options to the south of the main beach: the sandy Kathara Bay and pebbly Anthony Quinn beach are easily reached and perfect for snorkelling.
Those travelling with children will have plenty of family-friendly activities to choose from, including a visit to Faliraki Water Park – a huge complex comprising several pools, water slides and rides. It’s the largest water park in Europe and also has non-water based features, such as a Ferris wheel and a train, which will take you around the park. Other resort attractions include a fun fair (Luna Park) and a go-kart track.
If you’re in search of culture, Rhodes Town is just a 25-minute drive from Faliraki and has plenty to offer. The UNESCO-listed old town is one of the oldest inhabited Medieval towns in Europe. Other attractions include the Archaeological Museum, which features a marble Aphrodite of Rhodes statue.
Enjoy all that Faliraki and the northeast coast of Rhodes has to offer from the comfort of your rental car.
